Live chart, technical levels, and market analysis. Updated every hour.

Understanding XAU/USD

XAU/USD is the forex symbol for gold priced in US Dollars. XAU is the ISO 4217 code for gold (from the Latin aurum), and USD is the US Dollar. When you see XAU/USD = 2,300, it means one troy ounce of gold costs $2,300.

Unlike currency pairs, XAU/USD doesn't have a "base" country. Gold is a global asset priced in the world's reserve currency. This makes it particularly sensitive to:

  • Federal Reserve monetary policy (interest rates, QE/QT)
  • US Dollar Index (DXY) movements
  • US real yields (10-year TIPS)
  • Global risk-off events (wars, financial crises)

How to Read the XAU/USD Chart

Timeframes

  • Daily (D1): Best for identifying major trends and swing levels. Most institutional analysis uses this timeframe.
  • 4-hour (H4): Preferred by swing traders. Shows intraday structure without the noise of lower timeframes.
  • 1-hour (H1): Day trading entries and exits. Good for timing around key economic releases.
  • 15-minute (M15): For scalping during London/NY overlap (13:00–17:00 UTC) when gold is most liquid.

Key Technical Indicators for Gold

  • 200-day Moving Average: The most watched long-term trend indicator. Price above = bullish regime. Below = bearish.
  • RSI (14): Gold's RSI above 70 = overbought (watch for pullbacks). Below 30 = oversold.
  • Bollinger Bands: Gold respects BB extremes well — touching the upper band during low-volume periods often precedes reversals.
  • MACD: MACD crossovers on the daily timeframe are reliable signals for medium-term direction.

XAU/USD Trading Strategy

Strategy 1 — Trend Following (Swing Trading)

Gold trends strongly and respects the 200-day moving average as a key filter. When price is above the 200-DMA and pulls back to the 50-DMA, that's a buy zone. Hold until price hits the upper Bollinger Band or shows RSI divergence. Risk 1–2% per trade.

Strategy 2 — News Trading

Gold reacts sharply to US CPI, NFP, and Fed meetings. Typical moves: 0.5–2% within minutes. Strategy: wait 2–3 minutes after release for initial spike to fade, then trade in the direction of the fundamental surprise. Use tight stops (15–20 pips) and 1:3 R:R target.

Strategy 3 — Range Trading (Low Volatility Periods)

Gold consolidates for weeks before big moves. During ranging markets, buy at lower Bollinger Band + oversold RSI, sell at upper band + overbought RSI. Works best on H4–H1 timeframes. Exit immediately when a breakout candle forms.
